Dr. Robert L. Childress graduated with a BA from the University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts in 1968 with a major in psychology and a minor in chemistry. He continued at the University of Minnesota and received his DDS in 1972 from the School of Dentistry. Following graduation, he began a twenty-two year career as a Dental Corps Officer in the United States Army. He initially served his as a general dental officer until 1977. Dr. Childress was then selected for residency training in Pediatric Dentistry. He completed this training in 1979 at the University of Missouri Kansas City and Childrens Mercy Hospital. Dr. Childress received a graduate certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and an MS in Oral Biology.

He completed a series of both stateside and overseas assignments including Berlin and Okinawa serving in a variety of clinical, teaching and command assignments. During his career he also completed a number of Army Schools including the Army Command and General Staff College and the Army Flight Surgeon Course.

Following his Army retirement in 1994 Dr. Childress served for ten years as the only pediatric dentist in a large group practice (Dental Clinic of Marshfield) in Marshfield, WI. He was on the Board of Directors of the clinic for six year. Additionally he served terms both as corporate secretary-treasurer and vice president. Dr. Childress was also on the attending staff of St. Josephs Hospital in Marshfield. He retired from this position in 2004.

Dr. Childress is a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a member of the College of Pediatric Dentists, American Dental Association, and the Tennessee Dental Association.

Dr. and Mrs. Childress moved to Sewanee, TN in late 2004 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. He began working at Honeycutt Family Dentistry in February 2005. Dr. Childress is active in community affairs. He is president of the newly formed South Cumberland Community Association. He is also an active instrument rated private pilot. Dr. Childress regularly flies out of the Franklin County (Sewanee) Airport.
